Officials: Lombard fire destroys garage, vehicle inside

A fire Thursday morning destroyed a Lombard garage and the vehicle inside, causing about $50,000 in damage, fire officials said.

Lombard firefighters responded to the blaze at 7:50 a.m. on the 800 block of East St. Charles Road at Highland Avenue, Lombard fire officials said. A neighbor spotted the fire, which also damaged a home to the north.

Police shut down St. Charles Road in both directions while firefighters extinguished the blaze. ComEd cut power to the entire block for about 20 minutes.

Several fire departments assisted: Addison, Carol Stream, Oakbrook Terrace and York Center Fire Protection Districts, as well as Elmhurst, Lisle-Woodridge and Villa Park fire departments.

Residents were not home at the time, and no firefighters were hurt. The cause remains under investigation.
