Images: #TBT Gallery looks back at suburban garden clubs

According to the National Garden Clubs website, the first garden club in America was founded in January 1891, by the Ladies Garden Club of Athens, Georgia.

Since then, local garden clubs have sprung up across the country including many in the Chicago suburbs. Local members gather to share their love for horticulture, the environment and improving the community.

The Garden Club of Illinois was founded in 1925 and currently has more than 7,500 members and 160 clubs. Area towns with clubs include Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Des Plaines, Barrington, Lake Zurich, Mount Prospect, Grayslake, Naperville and Rolling Meadows.

As winter drags on, club members look forward to spring and upcoming flower and plant shows. The 89th Annual Garden Club of Illinois Convention will be held April 24-25 in Naperville and is open to the public.
