Glenbard students, staff to celebrate Live Life Well Week

Glenbard District 87 students and staff will celebrate Live Life Well Week from Feb. 15-20. Live Life Well Week, which is organized by each high school's Students for Students club, is designed to inspire students to face challenging situations constructively, manage stress and increase their emotional and physical well being.

This year's theme is Be Your Own Best Self. The week kicks off with a district-wide Glenbard Presidents Day of Service event from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15, at the Ackerman Sports and Fitness Center in Glen Ellyn. All students are invited to join in making blankets that will be donated to local hospitals for children with cancer. Pizza and blanket making supplies will be provided.

During the week, students will hear from author and television personality Josh Shipp, who will share his own story as he inspires and motivates students to thrive. Parents have the opportunity to hear Shipp at 7 p.m. Feb. 18 at Glenbard North High School as part of the Glenbard Parent Series. Join us when Shipp presents Helping Adults Understand Teens and Teens Understand Themselves. Details at glenbardgps.org.

Our REALITY IL/Teen Advisory Panel student leaders have organized a tobacco prevention campaign in conjunction with the Health Department as part of the week's events.

Students in nutrition and fitness classes will create nutritious recipes as part of the Healthy Cooking Challenge. Following the USDA's MyPlate guidelines, students compete to develop tasty, healthy dishes. Judges choose two winning recipes per class and students prepare the winning recipes to be served and further judged by their classmates in the school cafeteria.

A three-week Wellness Challenge also is planned for school staff. The staff challenge will be a competition between departments in each high school. Each week, staff members will record the number of minutes they participate in physical and mental health activity.

Additional actives planned for the week include:

Glenbard East

During lunch periods, Students for Students will coordinate activities that illustrate how to be your best self.

Glenbard North

Students Against Destructive Decisions S.A.D.D. / Students for Students S.F.S will sponsor Be You Own Best Self T-shirts and stickers. Students will create a bulletin board that asks individuals to identify what helps them to be their best self.

Glenbard South

Throughout the week, Glenbard South will host a winter clothing drive, and Glenbard South's nurse will provide free blood pressure checks. The week will wrap up with a healthy breakfast for students and staff on Friday, Feb. 19.

Glenbard West

On Wellness Wednesday, Student Council will help to distribute snacks with healthy lifestyle tips for teens, and after school, Students for Students will host a Positive Self-Talk meeting in room 224/225. A blood drive will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, in Glenbard West's field house. Adults are welcome to donate, and no appointment is necessary. On Friday, Feb. 19, Glenbard West students will participate in a Fitness Friday/Fitness Expo during their physical education classes. Also, the CARES parent organization will provide a free healthy breakfast before school in the cafeteria.
