Special Olympics events called off for Tuesday
The Special Olympics has canceled Tuesday's Winter Games events in Galena in response to anticipated hazardous weather that could make travel dangerous, officials say.
An opening ceremony in downtown Galena was also canceled, officials say.
"This weather system has the potential to make travel hazardous with heavy snow, sleet and winds," said David Shindley, Special Olympics Illinois Director of Sports Training & Competition. "We are planning on resuming competition on Wednesday and Thursday, but it will be up to each agency to make the best decision for them in regards to traveling and attending the competition."
The Weather Channel's forecast for the area includes 2 to 5 inches of snow through Tuesday night, as well as sleet and wind gusts of up to 35 mph.
A reception planned for Tuesday night at Eagle Ridge will continue. A new schedule of events is expected to be updated Monday night on the Special Olympics Illinois Winter Games webpage soill.org/winter-games.
