District 62 student on hand for check presentation
Fifth-grader "Principal for the Day" Mikey Petrenko didn't realize that when he won the honor of serving as the leader of Forest Elementary School at the school's PTC Fall Fest that he would do more than shadow his principal, Dr. Julie Fogarty.
In addition to seeing firsthand what principals do, he joined foundation and district representatives in the presentation of a generous check for more than $48,000 from the Rivers Casino Foundation.
Mikey joined Nelson Gray, assistant superintendent for business services; Paul Hertel, associate for human resources; Fogarty; and Patricia Olvera, Rivers Casino communications manager, in receiving the funds that will expand technology use and enhance teaching and learning for the Forest community.
Besides additional computers, a Makerspace will be created that expands and transforms assignments. Makerspaces combine technology, students, and education to design, prototype, and create various works in multiple curriculum areas that would be difficult to create without the resources.
