Ice rinks open in Mundelein

Grounds maintenance supervisor Paul Rogus used a small John Deere tractor with a brush to clear the snow off the ice rink at Keith Mione Community Park & Sports Complex in Mundelein.

"As long as we can have ice and as long as Mother Nature cooperates, it will be open. We will keep pouring water on it as long as we can, weather permitting," Rogus said Monday after he moved the hockey goal back into place on the ice.

It took workers 72 hours to build up the ice at the rink, which is maintained with the brush sweeper periodically to remove the snow, Rogus explained. This year has been particularly rough year for ice because of the warm weather in December.

The Mundelein Park & Recreation District ice rinks opened last week and will stay open as long as weather allows.

The Lions field Park ice rink is also open and, while it is not equipped with boards for hockey, it is available for recreational use.
