Woman dies after train hits SUV in Arlington Heights

A Rolling Meadows woman was killed Thursday when an inbound Metra train hit her SUV in Arlington Heights, causing the vehicle to burst into flames, police say.

The collision occurred about 2:30 p.m. along the Union Pacific Northwest Line near Northwest Highway and Euclid Avenue, and pushed the 2009 Honda Element about 1,000 feet east toward Ridge Avenue.

Zaiemunnisa Khan, 61, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputy Police Chief Andy Whowell said Khan had been driving around the lowered train gates to make a turn when she was hit by the train. Police believe she was attempting to go west on Euclid from Northwest Highway.

Inbound and outbound trains on the Union Pacific Northwest Line remained delayed up to 40 minutes throughout the evening, Metra's website said.

Police believe the warning lights and gates were in working order at the time of the crash.

No one on the train was injured in the crash, but Whowell said one person later had an anxiety attack and was taken to a hospital.
