Lake County Sheriff's deputy saves heroin overdose victim

A Lake County Sheriff's deputy using the anti-opiate drug naloxone saved the life of a 27-year-old woman suffering from a heroin overdose in a Lake Barrington home early Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Deputies were called about 12:25 a.m. to the 25500 block of North Countryside Drive on a report the woman was suffering from an opioid overdose after injecting heroin. When deputies arrived they found the woman unconscious and not breathing, sheriff's police said.

According to the sheriff's office, Deputy Kevin Crowley administered a dose of naloxone to the victim and began administering CPR. After the woman didn't respond, Crowley administered a second dose of naloxone, at which time the woman began to breathe on her own.

The woman was taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Lake Barrington for treatment. She was alert and conscious by the time she arrived at the hospital, authorities said.

"The quick actions of Lake County Sheriff's Office employees, along with their training and equipment, have allowed a 12th life to be saved to opioid overdose by the sheriff's office," Sheriff Mark Curran said in a news release. "This marks the 49th life saved in Lake County since the naloxone program began, just over one year ago."
