Naperville man, North Aurora teen face gun-related charges

A Naperville man and a North Aurora teen both face felony charges involving guns stemming from two separate cases, Aurora police said Tuesday.

Jeavil R. Walker, 21, of the 2900 block of White Thorn Circle in Naperville, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon when the car in which he was riding was stopped by police who responded to a call of shots fired around 2:20 a.m. Jan. 16.

Authorities said an Aurora officer was in a parking lot near Montgomery Road and Highland Court when he heard a gunshot and saw two vehicles - a sedan and a SUV - speed past. The officer called for backup and pulled both vehicles over at Pointe Boulevard and Edinburgh Lane.

At the same time, a different officer was approached by a resident on the 2200 block of Highfield Court who said two men she didn't know pounded on her front door demanding to see a man she never heard of. She told the officer that one of the men displayed a handgun and fired one shot in the air before they ran away. It appears nothing was hit.

Walker, who was seated in the SUV that was stopped, fit the description of the man who fired the shot. Police said they searched the vehicle and found a handgun that they were able to tie back to him.

The driver of the SUV, a 20-year-old man from Lynwood, was cited for driving without headlights. The other passengers in the vehicle, two 18-year-old men from Lansing and a 16-year-old from Plainfield, were released without charges.

The 19-year-old driver of the sedan also was released without being charged.

Police said their investigation is continuing.

In the second case, the 17-year-old from North Aurora was charged as a juvenile with three counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, not having a FOID card and illegal possession of cannabis.

Aurora police said he was taken into custody without incident around 7 p.m. Jan. 15 after the car in which he was riding was stopped for a traffic violation by investigators from the department's Special Operations Group near Lake Street and Sullivan Road.

When officers approached the vehicle they said they saw cannabis remnants on the teen's clothing and, when asked, he showed them he had additional marijuana.

The investigators searched the vehicle for further contraband and, with the help of a K-9 unit, found a loaded pistol in the trunk they were able to tie back to the juvenile. The handgun, which was reported stolen out of Texas, was wrapped in a sock and hidden inside of a child restraint seat, police said. Slightly more than six grams of cannabis also was found in his possession.

He was taken to the Kane County Juvenile Detention Center in St. Charles.

The driver of the vehicle, a 22-year-old Aurora man, was charged with improper lane use and three female passengers, a 17-year-old from Wheaton, a 16-year-old from Aurora and a 16-year-old from North Aurora, were released to their parents without charges.
