66-year-old man struck, killed crossing Route 173 in Antioch

The pedestrian who was struck and killed by a vehicle while crossing Route 173 in Antioch Monday night, was a 66-year-old man, authorities said Tuesday.

The victim's identity has not been released, pending notification of next of kin, authorities said.

Police said the man was crossing the busy roadway in front of Wal-Mart Superstore at 5:15 p.m. when he was struck by a Ford sedan traveling east.

The preliminary investigation shows the driver of the sedan saw the pedestrian holding something while standing on the middle median, authorities said. The driver changed lanes away from the victim, authorities said. However, after the car switched lanes, the pedestrian suddenly appeared in front of the vehicle and was struck, authorities said.

The unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later, officials from the Lake County Coroner's Office said.

The driver was taken to the hospital and later released, authorities said. He has not been charged at this time and the crash remains under investigation, officials said.

Route 173 was closed for several hours while Antioch police and members of the Lake County major Crash Assistance Team investigated the accident.
