Sheriff: Two men face charges after driving into Beach Park retention pond

Two men are facing charges after a vehicle was driven into a Beach Park retention pond Saturday, Lake County sheriff's officials said.

About 10 p.m., deputies responded to the 12600 block of West Wakefield Drive, where they found a Dodge Stratus in the retention pond, sheriff's Detective Chris Covelli said in a news release.

With the help of the sheriff's K-9 unit, deputies found cash and cannabis, along with packaging for distribution, in the car, he said.

Driver Devon S. Leedom, 20, of Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, and a passenger, James D. Poe, 23, of Wadsworth, are each charged with unlawful possession of cannabis with intent to distribute and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, Covelli said.

Leedom is also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a suspended driver's license and underage consumption of alcohol, officials said. He is being held on $7,000 bond in the Lake County jail, and his next court date is Jan. 22.

Poe faces additional charges for obstructing a peace officer after officials found him attempting to flee the scene, Covelli said. He was released on a $20,000 recognizance bond, and his next court date is Feb. 3.
