Black Tulip performs Jan. 31 in Grayslake

Black Tulip will perform "Tulips in Winter" at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, at the Byron Colby Barn in Grayslake as part of the 14th annual Early Music Series.

The Early Music Series at the Byron Colby Barn features highly acclaimed musicians performing music from the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods. Admission is $20 for adults and is available at the door only via cash or check (no credit cards). To inspire early appreciation for the arts, children younger than 16 are admitted free.

Black Tulip is a multinational ensemble of highly acclaimed musicians, including Josefien Stoppelenburg, soprano, of the Netherlands; Mirja Lorenz, recorder, of Germany; and Joel Spears, theorbo, and Phillip Serna, viol, both from the United States.

Black Tulip will perform music by Handel, Telemann, Vivaldi and Purcell, along with instrumental pieces by Castello, Kapsberger, Haquart and others.

Josefien Stoppelenburg graduated from the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music and is regularly featured as a soloist in the Netherlands, Germany and the United States. In 2013, she won the Chicago Oratorio Award, placed second nationally in the American Prize Opera Competition, and made her Korean debut.

Born and raised in Luebeck, Germany, Mirja Lorenz studied the recorder at Folkwang Musikhochschule in Duisburg/Germany with Gudrun Heyens, and later at the Hogeschool voor de kunsten in Utrecht/the Netherlands with Heiko ter Schegget. Mirja has performed in Germany, Sweden, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and Chicago.

Phillip W. Serna performs with numerous Midwest orchestras and early music ensembles and has appeared on Chicago's 98.7 WFMT, Wisconsin Public Radio, Milwaukee Public Radio and WUIS NPR. He is instructor of double bass and viola da gamba at Valparaiso University and also maintains a private teaching studio. Phillip is founder and music director of Viols in Our Schools, an Early Music program.

Joel Spears performs as a soloist and with numerous ensembles. He has performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Chicago Cultural Center, Bach Week in Evanston Festival, Handel Week Festival, Art Institute of Chicago, Madison Early Music Festival, as guest artist and lecturer at Grand Valley State University, and on 98.7 WFMT. Joel is lute instructor at the Music Institute of Chicago and artistic director of The Early Music Series at the Byron Colby Barn.

The Byron Colby Barn is at 1561 Jones Point Road in Grayslake, inside the Prairie Crossing conservation community. Ample free parking is in the parking lot adjacent to the Barn. Audience members are welcome to bring a bottle of wine to share with friends during performances.
