Harter Middle School remained in session during lockdown

Kaneland Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove was on lockdown for several hours Thursday after school officials learned of a threat of violence posted on an anonymous Twitter account.

The lockdown was lifted shortly before noon, and "the student who made the threat has been identified and is no longer a threat," Kaneland Community Unit School District 302 officials said in an email to parents.

District 302 Superintendent Todd Leden said a staff member saw an anonymous post Thursday morning after students arrived for the day. Sugar Grove police were called, and the school was put on "lockdown/continue instruction," where classes continued and students were allowed to move from classroom to classroom and those who left the building were escorted by Harter staff members.

Leden said authorities determined the threat was made by a Harter student, who was not identified by grade level nor gender.

"There was a threat made to school safety, a threat of violence," he said.

Leden said a small police presence was to remain at the school, 1601 Esker Drive, Sugar Grove, for the rest of the day to make parents and students feel safe, not because a threat still exists.

A message left with Sugar Grove police was not immediately returned.
