Bicyclist sustains severe injuries after being struck by a van in Glendale Hts.

A 29-year-old Glen Ellyn man was taken to the hospital Tuesday after he was struck by a vehicle around 2:30 p.m. while he was riding his bicycle on the 600 block of North Avenue in Glendale Heights, Glendale Heights police said in a news release.

The bicyclist sustained severe injuries, and was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, police said.

Preliminary investigation shows a 55-year-old Glendale Heights resident was driving a 2006 Toyota van traveling westbound on the shoulder of North Avenue when the vehicle collided with the bicyclist traveling eastbound on the same shoulder.

The Glendale Heights Police Department, DuPage County sheriff's office and the Glenside Fire District responded to the collision.

The Glendale Heights Police Department's accident investigators and evidence technicians are working with the DuPage County sheriff's office to investigate the collision.
