Frigid cold welcome at Volo Bog Winterfest

Garry and Debbie Steffen of Lake Villa laced up their skis and embraced the frigid cold as they went cross-country skiing across the frozen bog Sunday at the Volo Bog State Natural Area in Ingleside.

While many in the suburbs bundled up inside as subfreezing temperatures descended, participants at the bog's annual Winterfest welcomed the chilly weather with a variety of winter activities.

"This is a another Winterfest actually with snow on the ground. That's awesome," said Stacy Iwanicki, natural resources coordinator.

The long-standing winter event featured storytelling, photo contest awards, winter-themed crafts, outdoor hikes, bog tours, snow sculpting and more. Folk singers Kendra Swanson and Miles over Mountains provided musical entertainment, and the Friends of Volo Bog sold cookies, hot cocoa and coffee.
