Bensenville man charged with sexual assault of brother-in-law
Bail has been set at $350,000 for a 76-year-old Bensenville man accused of sexually assaulting his 60-year-old brother-in-law, who is mentally disabled.
John Cegielski, of Marshall Road, is charged with one count of criminal sexual assault.
Prosecutors said Cegielski shares a home with several family members, one of whom requires the assistance of an in-home nurse.
Prosecutors said the nurse caught Cegielski assaulting the 60-year-old-man around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday and immediately contacted authorities. Bensenville police arrested Cegielski later that day.
"Sexual crimes are, by their very nature, some of the worst crimes, with perpetrators leaving their victims to suffer not only at the time of the assault but possibly for years to come," DuPage County States Attorney Robert Berlin said in a written statement following the bail hearing. "It is alleged that this defendant, a trusted family member, committed this horrific act just to satisfy his own sick sexual desires. What I find particularly disturbing in this case is that the victim, who is severely handicapped, was unable to fend off the alleged assault."
Cegielski's next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 11 in front of Judge Liam Brennan.
