Sunnydale Elementary Ambassadors donate to food pantry

Students at Sunnydale Elementary in Streamwood hosted a Holiday Food Drive on Dec. 14, with donations to benefit the Hanover Township Food Pantry through the school's Ambassador program.

The Ambassadors is a leadership group that spreads awareness throughout the school while representing Sunnydale in a respectful and responsible manner. Created in partnership with the Hanover Township Department of Youth & Family Services, the group is made up of 27 students and has been active in the school for the past two years.

"The Ambassador program at Sunnydale is just one of the many examples our youth are continuing to make a difference in our community," said Brian P. McGuire, Hanover Township supervisor. "We look forward to continuing our relationship with them and are overwhelmed by their initiative to get involved this time of year."

Since Nov. 17, students decorated food boxes for each grade level and created fliers throughout the school to raise awareness on the Holiday Food Drive. Collections from the food drive were presented to the Hanover Township Food Pantry at a reception on Monday, Dec. 14.

"The Sunnydale Ambassadors are a group of students that support our Mustang Pride PBIS Program. Their voices represent all of our students and is essential in increasing student engagement," said Sunnydale Principal Denise Lockwald. "This year, they began a partnership with Hanover Township, through staff member Ryan McSheffrey. This partnership has been our first step in connecting with the greater community. With Ryan's help the students are beginning to grow as school and community leaders."
