Mundelein gets early start on New Year's celebration

Children and their parents kicked off the new year a bit early Sunday with a celebration at the Fremont Public Library in Mundelein.

The 45-minute event featured entertainer Ryan Freeman, who amused a crowd of more than 110 with magic tricks, juggling, yo-yo stunts and the launching of rocket balloons with the help of young audience members.

"It is exciting. Every year I try to come up with something fresh and different, and I really enjoy that," Freeman said. "This year we are trying to include a luau theme, so we are trying to bring a touch of the tropics right here to the library."

The theme, and Freeman's performance, was a hit among the kids and grown-ups at the annual celebration.

"We love it. The New Year's show is great," Dirk Leahy of Wauconda said as he placed a lei on his 2-year-old daughter Juliet. "She loves the balloons and she loves the luau."
