How to create the right vibe for your next Netflix and chill

You're not going to Netflix and chill with just anything on in the background; you want to set just the right vibe. So we've gathered a list of makeout movies (and series!) for your winter cuddles. Please watch responsibly.

Classic chill:

Could also be called the VCR and chill. These are the staples of make-out movie culture, perfect for serious couples or long-term partners. Nostalgic flicks from the 1980s and '90s are ideal for their sweetly predictable plots and characters. Girl meets guy, they fall in love, there's probably some quiet conflict but nothing too serious. These movies are the perfect metaphors for strong relationships: Dependable standbys that are comforting in their familiarity.

We suggest:

• "Titanic" (the makeout movie classic, iTunes rental)

• "When Harry Met Sally" (a thought-provoking romantic comedy that's not too thought-provoking; Amazon Prime)

• "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" (Ah yes, when Matthew Broderick was young, Sloane was a babe and everything was "Danke Schoen;" Netflix)

• The rest of the John Hughes canon ("Breakfast Club," "Say Anything," "Sixteen Candles"; Netflix)

White-noise chill:

As a friend told me, "I have learned so much about the history of this country just from (having sex with) my boyfriend."

She's talking about the History Channel Revolutionary War documentaries her boyfriend puts on to, you know, um, set the mood.

Sounds counter-intuitive, but maybe you're just looking for some background noise, nothing too engaging.

For one Internet friend, that flick was "The Last Samurai." As he explains it: "Nothing happens in the movie that's particularly interesting, and it's not so terrible that it ends up being too distracting or funny. It's easy not to focus on it."

We suggest:

• A tried-and-true television series ("Parks and Recreation," "Criminal Minds," "Frasier," etc.; on your favorite streaming service)

• Any Netflix documentary ("Jiro Dreams of Sushi," "Spinning Plates" and the "Blue Planet" series all feature tranquil soundtracks)

• SportsCenter (It's always on, so you don't have to worry about missing anything; ESPN)

Spicy chill:

This last category is the streaming option equivalents of Al Green - films and shows that are so sexy, it's nearly impossible to keep your hands to yourself.

We suggest:

• "Y Tu Mama Tambien" (hands-down the sexiest movie on Netflix)

• "Blue is the Warmest Color" (the Cannes Award-winning film, Netflix)

• "Looking" (a dreamily shot story about three gay men navigating San Francisco. It's warm, has a wonderful soundtrack and everyone is beautiful)

• "Gossip Girl" (the OG in scandalous OMFG television; Hulu)
