Where to celebrate the solstice in the Fox Valley

The longest night of the year, winter solstice, will happen on Monday, Dec. 21.

The solstice marks the beginning of winter, and it has been a cause for celebration since ancient times. Several upcoming events offer a chance to get in touch with the natural world, learn some history and contemplate the changing of the seasons.

Solstice Night Hike: 6:30 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20, at Prairieview Education Center, 2112 Behan Road, Crystal Lake. Participants will investigate old ways to celebrate this celestial event while creating new traditions with a candlelight night hike, ending at a warm campfire. Participants should not bring flashlights; they will let the candles and stars light their way. Fee is $3/$4; register at mccdistrict.org.

Ancient Cultural Traditions and the Solstice: 7-8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20, at Elgin Public Museum, Lords Park, 225 Grand Blvd. Learn about the Druid Oak King and the Holly Queen and watch the yule log be burned in a glowing campfire. Learn about the significance of the harvest and wildlife to ancient peoples. Drink warm cider and enjoy campfire treats. $5. (847) 741-6655 or elginpublicmuseum.org.

Winter solstice campfire: 4 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21, at Creek Bend Nature Center, 37W700 Dean St., LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, St. Charles. Learn about the winter solstice as naturalists tell stories from different cultures. All ages are welcome. Advance registration is required; call (630) 444-3190. kaneforest.com.

'Moon Gazing' at Gail Borden: 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, at the Gail Borden Public Library Rakow Branch, 2751 Bowes Road, Elgin. Drop by the Rakow Branch for a look at the moon on Winter Solstice with the possibility of seeing some planets. There will also be a story and hot chocolate. Free. gailborden.info.
