Harvest Christian's Castro reaches 1,000 mark

Any athlete would prefer to reach a milestone when their team wins.

And while that's certainly the case for Harvest Christian senior Paulina Castro, she knows that the learning experiences she and her Lions' teammates are getting early this season will undoubtedly reap benefits come postseason time.

Castro scored 10 points Friday night to eclipse the 1,000-point mark for her high school career but she accomplished the feat in a 74-32 loss to Chicago Bogan in the Chi-town Showdown at Whitney Young. Bogan took

"It's a big milestone and it's exciting. Everyone has been really supportive of it and it's great," said Castro, an NIU recruit who now has 1,002 points in her career, which started at Montini for two years before she transferred to Harvest.

"We've got a really tough schedule this season and we know we're learning from these games. These games will help us grow and help us success in the postseason."

Sophomore Alyssa Iverson led Harvest (6-4) with 11 points in Friday's game.

Burlington Central 70, North Boone 22: Rockets' senior Shelby Holt scored 8 points to come within 2 of reaching 1,000 for her career as BC (6-0, 2-0) rolled to their 40th straight Big Northern East win. Holt can reach the milestone Monday night at Rocket Hill when BC hosts Rockford Christian. Senior Kayla Ross took another step toward 1,000 career points in the win by scoring a game-high 25 to lead the Rockets. Ross now has 872 career points. Sam Pryor, already over 1,000 for her career, added 11 points and Kristina Ahlers had 12 for BC.

West Aurora 66, East Aurora 49: In the Upstate Eight Valley, Ashley Williams had 17 points and 7 rebounds while Carley Frauenhoff scored 14 points to lead the Blackhawks (5-3, 1-0). Jemya McClendon had 8 rebounds for the winners with Kiyanna Rodgers (4 steals) and Skylar Doby (5 steals) leading the defense.

Batavia 68, Streamwood 37: Hannah Frazier had 20 points and Elena Cabrera added 8 to lead the Bulldogs (8-1, 3-0) to an Upstate Eight River win. Bethany Orman chipped in 6 assists for Batavia. Jenejha Williams led Streamwood (0-9, 0-3) with 25 points, 16 rebounds and 5 blocks.

Bartlett 75, West Chicago 32: Kayla Hare scored 20 points while Nicole Gerdevich and Shelley Lyjak added 10 each to lead Bartlett (5-4, 1-1) to a UEC Valley victory.

St. Charles East 76, Elgin 34: Hannah Vitkus had 15 points, Sara Rosenfeldt 12 and Kathleen Townsend 10 to help the Saints (2-6, 1-0) to an Upstate Eight River win. Tianna Stewart led Elgin (1-8, 0-3) with 14 points and Alisha Panthier added 9.

Kaneland 53, DeKalb 41: Camri Conley scored 16 points and Jenni Weber added 11 to lead the Knights (7-1, 2-1) to a Northern Illinois Big XII East win.
