Stevenson High student charged as adult in gun case

A 17-year-old Stevenson High School junior who authorities said brought an unloaded handgun to school Friday will face prosecution as an adult.

Lamont Glenn appeared in Lake County circuit court Monday for a bond hearing, where the charges were announced. Glenn, of the 1000 block of Ranchview Court in Buffalo Grove, has been charged with felony unlawful use of a weapon, felony unlawful possession of a firearm and a misdemeanor count of not having a firearm owners identification card.

The Lake County state's attorney's office had some discretion in whether to charge Glenn as a teen or an adult. Prosecutors went with adult charges because of the nature of the crime, State's Attorney Michael Nerheim said.

"The people of Lake County have the right to expect that when they send their children to school, they will be cared for in an environment that is safe and conducive to learning," Nerheim said. "Simply stated, guns have no place in our schools and will not be tolerated."

Glenn's bail was set Monday at $50,000 by Judge Christen Bishop. Although charged as an adult, Glenn will continue to be held at the county's juvenile detention center near Vernon Hills because of his age.

Bishop ordered Glenn to stay away from Stevenson, and he can't be in possession of drugs or alcohol, officials said.

Under Stevenson guidelines, a student found to be in possession of a weapon can be expelled by the school board.

"It is fair to say that we will do whatever it takes to ensure the safety of our students," school spokesman Jim Conrey said. He declined to specifically comment on Glenn's fate.

Glenn was arrested Friday morning by Lincolnshire police after school officials were tipped off that he brought a gun to school the day before, authorities said.

That tip came from a parent who'd received a text from a student who alleged a classmate had a gun, authorities said. Officials spoke with students and learned Glenn had the gun with him Friday, too, officials said.

Glenn was located in a classroom, and the gun - a .38-caliber revolver - was in a nearby backpack, wrapped in a bandanna, authorities said.

No one was hurt. The school day continued without incident.

Glenn didn't say much to police about the gun or his intentions after the arrest. He did, however, confirm he brought the gun to school, Lincolnshire Deputy Police Chief William Price said Monday.

"He said he bought it and he wouldn't tell us where," Price said.

The teen also wouldn't tell investigators why he went to school armed.

"He wouldn't give a specific reason," Price said.

Police will work with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to trace the gun's ownership, Price said.

Glenn is next scheduled to appear in court Thursday.

The incident was the second of its kind last week in the Northwest suburbs.

A Barrington High School student was arrested Nov. 30 after bringing a .357-caliber revolver and ammunition to school.

That student, 16-year-old Kyle Robert Johnson of Barrington, also was charged as an adult in Lake County court with unlawful use of a weapon.

Like Glenn, Johnson is held at the county's juvenile center.
