Coroner rules death of Indiana University student suicide

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - A coroner has ruled the death of an Indiana University student whose body was found in a lake in October a suicide.

The (Bloomington) Herald-Times reports (http://bit.ly/1Q6VfRh) Monroe County Coroner Nicole Meyer says she waited for results from toxicology tests before releasing the cause and manner of death on Friday for 20-year-old Joseph Smedley of Indianapolis.

His body was found Oct. 2 in Griffy Lake, a few miles north of the school's campus.

His sister had reported him missing four days earlier, after she received 4 a.m. text messages from Smedley, which said he planned to leave the country.
