Elk Grove pulls away at Rolling Meadows

Elk Grove's boys basketball team got a little breathing room at Rolling Meadows toward the end of the third quarter before getting some significant separation in the fourth on the way to a 61-50 victory in a Mid-Suburban East opener Friday.

The game was tied at 15 after the first quarter, and the Grens led 30-27 at the half. By the end of the third quarter, Elk Grove led 44-37 before going on a spurt that made it 61-42 midway through the fourth quarter.

A balanced approach paid dividends for the Grens (4-2, 1-0), who got 11 points from four seniors - Joe Gatziolis, Bradley Hubly, Tyree Howard and Kyle Zuba.

Junior forward Jared Murphy led all scorers with 17 points for Rolling Meadows (0-5, 0-1).

Christian Liberty 52, Alden-Hebron 37: Mark Cabrera had 8 points and led and effort in which 10 players scored as the Chargers picked up a road victory in Northeastern Athletic Conference play.
