Wheeling to start charging stormwater fees in 2016

Wheeling taxpayers will see a new fee tacked onto their water bill starting in 2016 as the village board unanimously approved a stormwater management fee system last week.

The village will charge taxpayers for impervious surfaces where water is not easily absorbed into the ground, such as driveways, rooftops and parking lots.

An owner of a single-family home is expected to pay an extra $24 a year, though that amount likely will increase as the cost of maintenance and projects go up.

Industrial lots will pay an average $636 for the first year, and commercial lots will pay an average $374 for the first year.

The village previously yanked tax dollars from their intended use to pay for stormwater management, but Director of Finance Michael Mondschain says the system need its own funding source.
