Experts can help you spot eagles Dec. 12

Representatives from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Friends of Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and McHenry County Audubon will be available from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at four locations along the Fox River to help search for eagles and other birds using the waterway. Volunteers and staff will share views through spotting scopes and binoculars, and help novices identify the birds they see at the McHenry dam, the Algonquin dam, and the Carpentersville dam, and at the Burlington dam in Wisconsin. Maps to all locations are posted at www.hackmatacknwr.org. After the outdoor excursions, the public is invited to enjoy free hot chocolate at the McHenry County Conservation District's (MCCD) Prairieview Education Center in Crystal Lake and learn more about eagles at free presentation with live raptors from 11 a.m. to noon. The program is free but space is limited and registration is required. Call (815) 479-5779.
