Maine East tops Wheeling
The third quarter was the downfall for Wheeling's boys basketball team in tournament play at Northridge Prep on Saturday.
Limited to 5 points in the period, the Wildcats couldn't quite come back in a 47-43 loss to Maine East. Wheeling wrapped up the Battle at the Ridge with a 2-2 record.
T.J. Best and Jalen Dennis both finished with 13 points for Wheeling, and Patrick Szpir had 7. Both Best and Dennis finished with three 3-pointers.
Ashoor Doushow led all scorers with 20 points, including four 3s, for Maine East.
Vernon Hills 48, Leyden 44: The Cougars withstood a 19-point effort from Leyden in the fourth quarter to earn a tournament-ending victory at Northridge Prep.
Michael Dougherty led Vernon Hills with 13 points and Tanner Tolari had three 3-pointers and finished with 11.
The Cougars (3-1) took control by holding Leyden to 5 points in the third quarter.
Senior guard Adrian Guerrero led Leyden with 13 points, 9 of them in the fourth quarter, and senior center DeAndre Williams had 10.
Fremd 83, Mundelein 41: The Vikings improved to 4-1 to grab a second-place tournament finish at Mundelein.
Plainfield East 48, Schaumburg 40: The Saxons dropped the seventh-place game at St. Charles East to finish 0-4 in the tournament.
