Schaumburg library offers escape from winter doldrums

Picture this: Pewter skies, subzero winds and snow flurries chill the air as another polar vortex sweeps through our great Prairie State.

What can you do in the depths of winter? Come to the library, or visit www.schaumburglibrary.org from the warm comfort of your home, and join "Your Library: The Great Escape!"

This winter reading program begins Tuesday, Dec. 1, and continues through Sunday, Jan. 31, with plenty of opportunities to have fun, learn a thing or two, attend programs, go on bus trips, and win prizes. Adults, teens and children each have their own ways to escape, with plenty of opportunities.

Signing up is easy and takes place at the Central Library in Schaumburg, as well as the branches in Hoffman Estates and Hanover Park. A signup table for all ages will be available from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, in the Central Library lobby.

Adults can sign up in person or online at www.schaumburglibrary.org/read. You can log online or use a paper log to record your books, video viewing selections, programs or trips. From there, you can dive into a plethora of activities. Books and videos in all genres are available throughout the library, of course, but try some of our other offerings as well.

If you like food, come and learn about whole grains or Superbowl snacks. Science? Don't miss "Searching for Earth Elsewhere." If you're feeling creative, sign up for a ceramics, clay sculpting or gardening workshop.

Need to get away? Check out the library's bus trips to musicals, operas, or even a downtown Chicago shopping excursion. And don't forget our variety of book discussion groups.

Throughout the adult Winter Reading Program, two names will be drawn each week, with each winner receiving a $10 Target gift card. All participants are eligible for the weekly drawings, but only STDL cardholders are eligible for the grand prize drawing of an Android tablet.

Simply log six of these activities to complete the winter reading program. If you have questions about the adult winter reading program, call (847) 923-3140.

Teens participating in "Your Library: The Great Escape" will sign up and log all of their books and activities online, then receive one ticket per review or program attended. Participating teens will be entered into weekly drawings in which two winners will each win a $10 gift card.

Those who write five reviews and complete the program will be entered into a drawing to win a tablet. For questions about the teen reading program, call (847) 923-3240 or email teen@stdl.org.

For children, sign up takes place online or in person in the Central Library kidsZone or the branch libraries. Each time they read for 30 minutes, they will color one of the little snowmen or mittens on their reading log.

Once the log is complete, they can turn it in anytime between Dec. 15 and Jan. 31 to receive a prize - their choice of a paperback book from the variety of books offered. For questions about the children's reading program, call (847) 923-3439.
