See how Christmas was celebrated in the 19th century

Start the holiday season with the tradition and charm of an authentic 19th century German-American Christmas.

Schaumburg Park District's Christmas in the Valley will be noon to 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 5, and Sunday, Dec. 6, at Spring Valley Nature Center and Volkening Heritage Farm, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road.

"You can't help but get into the holiday spirit at Christmas in the Valley," said Mary Rice, education coordinator. "There will be visits with St. Nicholas, old fashioned decorations and 19th century holiday music and crafts. The whole atmosphere is about the scents and tastes of the holidays."

Visitors will taste traditional foods, have the opportunity to purchase homemade gifts and see farm chores completed. Also featured will be cookie decorating. Hot drinks and refreshments will be available for purchase.

Cost is $3 per person or $12 per family of six or fewer. Additional family members are $3 each; free for kids 3 and younger.

Parking is available at Spring Valley Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road. Shuttle bus transportation will be provided to the farm.
