Video shows Chicago cop shooting teen after he had fallen

Jason Van Dyke, the white Chicago police officer who shot Laquan McDonald 16 times last year, was charged with first-degree murder Tuesday, hours before the city released the dash-cam video of the killing that many people fear could spark unrest. Shortly after the video's release, protesters began marching through city streets. Several hundred people blocked traffic on the near West Side. DuPage state's attorney investigating police-involved shooting in Lisle

The investigation into the Oct. 10 fatal shooting of a burglary suspect by a Lisle police officer is now in the hands of the DuPage County State's Attorney's office, which could determine if the shooting was justified, ask for further investigation or take it to a grand jury. Police have said a three-year veteran of the department fired the fatal shot into the right lower chest of Lisle resident Anthony Aguilar shortly after 5:15 a.m. when the officer and two others responded to a burglary in progress on the 4400 block of Yender Avenue. Mundelein trustee tells residents complaining about snow removal to 'drive less'

Mundelein Trustee Dakotah Norton Tuesday lashed out at residents complaining about the quality of local roads after Saturday's snowstorm, telling them to "drive less" in a Facebook post. He later deleted the comment, though he says he doesn't regret the post. "I understand that people may be upset by the way I've phrased that, but I maintain I did not do anything wrong," Norton said. Candidate who says God punishes gays tries to get back on ballot

Susanne Atanus, a candidate for Congress who the local and state Republican Party tried to pull from the ballot over controversial comments in 2014, has signed up to run again in the 9th Congressional District. Cook County GOP Chairman Aaron Del Mar says someone with the party will "for sure" challenge Atanus' petitions in an attempt to get her removed from the race. Atanus, made national headlines when she suggested in a Daily Herald endorsement interview that God put tornadoes and diseases such as autism and dementia on Earth in response to gay rights and legalized abortions. Cook County suburbs tally $244 million in legal fees

Suburbs in Cook County have spent $244 million on private attorneys since 2010, with some of the largest bills being paid by towns suffering financial hardships brought on by police misconduct and corruption claims, according to a Better Government Association analysis. The top spenders are Cicero, $15.3 million; Calumet City, $7.2 million; Harvey, $6.7 million; Oak Lawn, $6.6 million; and Rosemont, $6.1 million. Full story.

Illinois considering offering SAT to high school juniors

The state of Illinois is closing in on a deal to give high school juniors the SAT college entrance exam next spring, potentially ending decades of regional preference for the ACT exam. The College Board - the testing company that provides the SAT college entrance exam - submitted a winning bid with the state board of education to test 143,000 high school students annually over the next three years. DuPage County approves budget that cuts 10 sheriff's office jobs

DuPage County Board members have approved a $444.4 million budget for the coming fiscal year that eliminates 10 full-time positions at the sheriff's office. Sheriff John Zaruba said DuPage residents "lost" on Tuesday because of "the elimination of 10 more cops on the street." But board Chairman Dan Cronin says Zaruba needs to manage his department's budget better. Full story.
