Queen of the Rosary fifth-graders complete DARE

Queen of the Rosary fifth-grade students completed the 2015-2016 DARE program under the direction of officer Dave Johnson of the Elk Grove Village Police Department.

Officer Johnson, Crime Prevention specialist, engaged the students in discussions about drug safety, peer pressure and making choices. Students learned how to recognize bullying, including cyberbullying, and gained an understanding of the words empathy, sympathy and apathy.

On Tuesday, Nov. 17, parents attended the Elk Grove School's DARE culmination ceremony presented by Johnson. The Rev. Dave Straub, the Rev. Michael Owen, Chief Schmidt, Sergeant Andrew Jensen and Lion Richard Keyworth were in attendance.

At the ceremony, each fifth-grade student was recognized individually and presented with a DARE certificate of achievement.

Derek Schlenbecker was named DARE Student of the Year and Mary Rittle was runner-up. Charles Banak, Jake Lisanti, Karolina Pater and Katelyn McCormick received Honorable Mentions.

Lions Club provided DARE T-shirts for each of the students.
