Two teens involved in Elgin stabbing

Elgin Police said they are investigating a stabbing in broad daylight Tuesday in downtown.

Around 12:30 p.m., two teenage boys who were walking along different sides of Kimball Street near Gail Borden Public Library started flashing gang signs at each other, police said.

"It seemed like there was a chance encounter between two rival gang members that escalated into an argument, which resulted in the stabbing," said Sgt. Chris Troiola with Elgin Police Department's gang unit. "Both the offender and the victim are juveniles."

The victim sustained a non-life-threatening injury and was taken to Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin.

"He may be transported to (Advocate) Lutheran General (in Park Ridge) as a precautionary measure," Troiola said.

After receiving a couple of 911 calls tipping them about the stabbing, officers tracked down the suspect a few blocks away and have him in custody, Troiola said.

Police are asking anyone with information about the stabbing to call (847) 289-2507.
