Career best for Gritt in Hersey's win

Junior guard Claire Gritt scored 22 of her game-high 28 points in the first half to help lead Hersey's girls basketball team past Libertyville 65-40 in the second round of the Bison Classic at Buffalo Grove High School on Saturday.

Gritt's offensive gem, which included 12 field goals (three 3-pointers), bested her previous career-high of 27 points, set last year against Wheeling.

Also reaching double figures for the Huskies was junior guard Gina Miklasz with 13 points while Kelly Weyhrich and Maggie Berigan each chipped in 7.

Hersey improved to 2-0 in the tournament and faces Barrington on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Maine South High School.

Buffalo Grove 59, Maine South 33: BG senior Sammy Stejskal fired home 25 points, just 2 shy of her career best of 27 which she scored against Hersey in this same Bison Classic a year ago.

Stejskal and teammate Maddie Welter (11 points) each hit three 3-pointers.

Teammates Georgette Topalis and Amanda Kowalski each chipped in 7 points as the Bison evened their record to 1-1 over the Hawks (0-2).

Conant 48, Downers Grove South 40: Just two days after scoring a career-high 40 points, junior guard Jorie Wachal put up 36 to help the Cougars finish 2-3 in the York Thanksgiving tournament.

Conant led 28-27 heading into the final quarter when Wachal scored 15 of the Cougars' 20 points, including 9-of-10 free throws and 3 field goals.

Junior Michelle Benson added 8 points for the Cougars, including their only 3-pointers (2) of the game.

Elk Grove 52, Deerfield 45: Less than 24 hours after falling at Fremd, Elk Grove (1-2) came back and notched its first win of the season.

Sarah Pauscher (19 points), Jenny Banak (8) and Mackenzie Flannery (6) led the Grenadiers in the third round of the Turkey Thriller at Lake Zurich High School.

Fremd 64, Lake Zurich 32: Fremd (3-0) was led by junior Grace Tworek (15 points), senior Bryana Hopkins (11) and senior Amanda McCartney (9) in round two of the Turkey Thriller held at Lake Zurich High School in Saturday. The Vikings led 39-16 at half.

Leyden 52, Elgin 42: Junior Cherish Sepulveda (14 points) and senior Gianna Grande (11) led Leyden (2-0) to its second win in the Fenton/Addison Trail tournament. Jenny Ortiz added 6 points for the Eagles while Annissa Lemon and Amalia Figueroa each chipped in 5.

Maine West 51, Christ The King 34: Freshman Rachel Kent led the Warriors with 14 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists as West improved to 3-0 in the Hoffman Estates Thanksgiving tournament.

Senior Jordan Hart had 8 points and 6 rebounds and classmate Kayla Pociejewski added 7 points with 5 assists as coach Derril Kipp was able to play all 14 of his girls.

Rolling Meadows 72, Cary-Grove 48: Junior guard Kyra Spiwak (two 3-pointers) had a game-high 22 points as Meadows improved to 2-1 in the Turkey Thriller. Morgan Campagna (12 points), Melissa Spiwak (11) and Katherine Nolan (9) were the next highest scorers for the Mustangs, who hit six 3-pointers.

"I thought our kids played our first complete game of the season," said Meadows coach Ryan Kirkorsky. "We made plays for teammates on both ends of the floor, and we received contributions from all 11 players."

Proviso West 49, Hoffman Estates 45: The game was tied at 44-44 before Proviso West scored 6 of the game's final 7 points.

Hoffman junior Monraia Wilson (one 3-pointer) scored a game-high 19 points while Tayler Williams added 11 with three 3-pointers. Jenny Nailor added 6 points for the Hawks, who are now 1-2 in their own Thanksgiving tournament.

Rich East 46, Barrington 33: Rich East improved to 2-0 in the Bison Classic at Buffalo Grove while Barrington (1-1) was led by senior Megan Talbot's 10 points. Abigail Elo added 6 points for the Fillies while Alex Van Ryne and Kelly Katis had 5 apiece.

Wheaton Warrenville South 43, Schaumburg 40: The Saxons (2-1) were led by juniors Laura O'Connell (16 points), Mallory Gerber (11) and Gina D'Orazio (three 3-pointers) in the third-round game of the Schaumburg Thanksgiving tournament.

McHenry 33, Palatine 27: Palatine (2-1) suffered its first loss at the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving tournament.

Prospect vs. York: Due to the adverse weather on Saturday, Prospect's final game of the York Thanksgiving tournament against the host Dukes was postponed until Tuesday. The time is still to be determined. The Knights are currently 3-1 under first-year coach Gabrielle Lovin.
