More than 20,000 transit riders had downloaded a smartphone app allowing virtual ticketing on Metra before the evening rush yesterday, officials said. Romano gets life in prison for killing dad, stepmom

Calling his actions “disgusting,” a judge sentenced a former Algonquin man to life in prison yesterday for killing his dad and stepmom for their inheritance. A jury convicted Michael Romano, 56, in early October of gunning down his father, Nick Romano Sr., 71, and his stepmother, Gloria, 65, in their Cary-area home. Full story.

Twice as many animals euthanized this year at Kane County shelter

Kane County's Animal Control shelter will have euthanized more than twice as many dogs and cats by the end of this year as it did last year. Stats for the fiscal year through October show the shelter put down 61 of the 355 dogs, cats and other animals it took in so far this year. That's an euthanization rate of about 17 percent. A Kenosha man has been charged with a bank robbery last week in Waukegan. The robbery occurred at 11:30 a.m. last Thursday at a bank on the 700 block of North Green Bay Road, Waukegan police said. Full story.

Uber driver sentenced to probation for firing at passengers

An Uber driver who shot at a passenger who shattered his car's moon roof with a rock pleaded guilty yesterday to reckless discharge of a firearm. The shots concluded an altercation that began after White picked up five passengers from a party in Rolling Meadows about 3 a.m. June 6. Full story.
