Basketball blowout, self-defense and more at South Elgin parks

Science Secrets at Amusement Parks: Whether you like science or not, kids will love learning behind the science secrets of the amusement park, traveling carnival and water park industry. They are combining FUNderstanding science concepts while learning about rides, concessions confections, carnival games, and water slides. The fee for residents is $79, and the fee for nonresidents is $89. The classes will be Tuesday, Dec. 1, at the Municipal Annex. The class for age 4-6 will be 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and the class for age 7-11 will be 6-7 p.m.

Self-Defense for Women: Can you defend yourself if you were in a compromising situation? Learn defense techniques, how to sense trouble, and safety tips from an expert. The instructors will include Pam Neil, a 78-year-old black belt in karate, will teach you how. You're never too old to learn something new! Classes will be held at Visiting Angels, 65 Woodbury St., from 2 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3. There is no fee for this class.

Klub Friday Night: Join in a "Basketball Blowout" from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, at Kenyon Woods Middle School. Cost is $5 at the door with a KFN ID and $20 without an ID. IDs can be purchased at the village hall. The cost is $15 for residents and $20 nonresidents.

Digging for Dinosaurs: They will be introduced to the differences between meat-eating and plant-eating animals and will have the opportunity to look at some dinosaur teeth up close. They will also work as paleontologists by participating in a mini dinosaur dig that will engage their attention as well as their scientific skills. Class will be held from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at the municipal annex. The fee for residents is $15, and the fee for nonresidents is $18.

Watts Up: This class offers children a solid introduction to the properties of electricity and electric charges. Children discover an electric charge's basic properties, learn to distinguish between static electricity and electrical current, and explore the science behind the phenomena. Hands-on activities provide a tactile lesson in charging and discharging objects with static electricity. Children will be able to relate a new found understanding of lightning and static-electric shocks - that may have previously been confusing or even frightening - to their daily lives. They will learn how to protect themselves from electric shocks and lightning. This class will be held from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Municipal Annex. The fee for residents is $15, and the fee for nonresidents is $20.

Cookies, Cookies, Cookies: Traditional Christmas cookies will be mixed, baked, frosted and enjoyed during this hands on cooking workshop. In addition to the sugar cookies, they will create snicker doodles, no bake refrigerator goodies, chocolate-covered pretzel rods and more! Parents, please join your junior chef the last 15 minutes for sampling! Recipes will be sent home. Please note any allergies at the time of registration. Class will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, at the municipal annex. The fee for residents is $17, and the fee for nonresidents is $20.
