Arlington Heights seeks residents' input on garbage collection

Arlington Heights officials want to hear from residents before they decide whether to keep garbage collection twice a week or switch to once-a-week pickup.

On Monday, the village board voted to stay with Groot Industries as its waste hauler for at least the next five years, but details of the contract are still being finalized. Among the remaining issues is the frequency of pickup.

Arlington Heights is one of a few communities in the area that still has garbage collection for residents two days each week. Several trustees have said they want to see it reduced to once a week to save money and minimize wear on village roads from the heavy trucks.

There also is an option where the village would switch to once weekly collection, but residents who want to stay with twice a week could pay extra for the service.

Residents can email the village at healthmail@vah.com by 5 p.m. Dec. 3 with their address and opinion on the topic. Full price details are available on the village's website www.vah.com.
