Side Street Studio Arts brings back art exchange

Side Street Studio Arts in downtown Elgin, in partnership with Nashville, Tenn.-based artists Carrie Gant and Kyle Numann, is seeking visual and performing artists for their second annual EXCHANGE, an art swap featuring Tennessee and Illinois-based artists.

This collaboration will allow artists' work to travel and reach audiences in two different arts markets, creating money-making and networking opportunities for artists, and will start to bridge the distance between working artists in the United States.

The deadline to submit is Tuesday, Dec. 1. No late submissions will be accepted. There is a $10 submission fee. Once they receive your submission, they will send you an invoice for the $10 submission fee. If they do not receive your submission fee, your work will not be considered. Submission fees help offset the staff, marketing, travel, install, etc. costs of EXCHANGE. Complete one form per piece of work - do not put multiple pieces on the same form, unless they are a series meant to be displayed as one.

A select group of visual and performing artists will be chosen to represent the two locations and travel from their home state to the other and back again. Shipping, display, and exhibition of visual work will be paid for and handled by Gant, Numann, and Side Street Studio Arts.

Travel and lodging assistance will be provided for selected performing artists. 2015's EXCHANGE project with Phoenix, Ariz., featured performances and visual art works from over 20 Illinois-based artists and saw more than $4,000 returned to those artists in support of their work.

On March 11-13, the Illinois art will be on display at Hound Dog Commons in Nashville. On Saturday, March 12, there will be a reception for the Illinois artists, featuring Illinois and Tennessee performing artists.

Starting Friday, April 1, the Tennessee visual art will be on display at Side Street Studio Arts in Elgin, with a reception for the Tennessee artists, featuring Illinois and Tennessee performing artists. On Saturday, April 2, artists from both states are invited to participate in Side Street Studio Arts' "Ultimate Painting."

Kyle Numann is a musician and artist working in the psychological space where everyday life confronts the absurdity of scientific existence. In his music, he mixes sonic experimentation and analytical lyricism with traditional songcraft and melody, creating live shows and recordings that bend between hummable verses and nonrepresentational sound compositions. With his art, Numann mostly works with a black & white technique to create highly detailed symbolic illustrations. Recently his compositions have focused on a theme of embodied subject-landscapes which reveal human characteristics and qualities through a very intentional rendering of natural environments.

Carrie Gant is from Nashville, Tennessee, where she received her bachelor of science at Middle Tennessee State University. She currently works out of Nashville; setting stage and site specific performances, performing and choreographing for music videos and performances, and teaching students of all ages. Her had her work "Sink the Yesterday" adjudicated as a part of The American College Dance Festival in 2009. She has performed/presented work throughout the U.S. including performing with Jane's Addiction, Pujol, Thelma and the Sleaze, Nashville Fashion Week 2014 and QDP.
