FBI arrests suspect in Arlington Heights bank robbery

The FBI announced Wednesday that it arrested an Arlington Heights man suspected of robbing a bank in town last week.

John P. Stoessel, 37, of the 300 block of West Tanglewood Drive, was arrested Tuesday and charged with one count of bank robbery in U.S. District Court in Chicago, according to a news release.

He is accused of robbing the TCF Bank branch at Jewel-Osco, 440 E. Rand Road, shortly after 10 a.m. on Nov. 9. According to police reports, a robber approached a bank employee and made a threatening demand for money. He allegedly indicated he was armed, although no weapon was displayed, the FBI said.

Media coverage of the robbery, which included a still image from video security footage, led someone to identify Stoessel to law enforcement officials, police said.

The case was investigated with the help of police from Arlington Heights, Palatine, Villa Park and the Illinois Department of Corrections.

If convicted, Stoessel faces a possible sentence of up to 20 years in prison, according to the FBI.

Stoessel appeared in court on Tuesday and was ordered held pending his next court appearance on Dec. 10.
