Help Serve the Community this Christmas

The Humanitarian Service Project (HSP) of DuPage County is calling on members of the community for support in order to provide for those in need in DuPage and Kane counties this Christmas. HSP has been providing groceries and gifts to local families suffering under poverty since Christmas of 1979. This year, HSP is projected to serve 400 families with nutritious groceries as well as provide 2,000 children and 133 seniors with Christmas gifts.

Donations of non-perishable food and monetary support are needed to alleviate the burden of hunger for 400 local, low-income families served by this program. For a monetary sponsorship of $60 per family, donors can ensure the children and their families have access to healthy groceries, such as fresh produce, during this period of particular financial stress for those struggling with poverty.

There are a number of ways to support the program including participating in the "Giving Tree" program. Donations of toys for children between 8-15 years old are especially needed. HSP is receiving calls daily from impoverished families hoping to have their children included on the waiting list for Christmas.

HSP also has volunteer spots available during daytime hours from December 1st -December 18th to prepare and distribute the food and gifts to the families and senior citizens. Those interested in volunteering should contact HSP to reserve a timeslot.

Since its inception 37 years ago, HSP has spread holiday joy to the neediest members of DuPage and Kane. HSP's Executive Director Kristin Senne said of the project, "Every year we help hundreds of families that are working hard, but struggling to afford daily necessities. Through the Christmas Offering we look for the support of people in our community to help spread happiness with gifts for children and much needed groceries for families. Together we can accomplish amazing things."

About The Humanitarian Service Project:

HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates for seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane counties, Illinois. HSP was founded in 1979 by Karole and Floyd Kettering to alleviate the stress of poverty on the county's most needy. Last year during the Christmas Offering Project, 2,014 children received gifts and over 400 impoverished families received groceries. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides monthly food deliveries and secret pal gifts to 133 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays a truly memorable occasion for 925 children. Feed the Kids provides 100 low-income families with groceries and fresh produce during the summer months. HSP conducts an annual school supply drive that benefits over 3,000 children by giving supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair, Kane County's "Project Backpack" and directly to schools with a high percentage of poverty.
