Music notes: Cooled Out Babies, Van Goghs rock Debonair

<h3 class="briefHead">Babies, Van Goghs go Debonair</h3>

If the Beach Boys joined an indie band and played Lollapalooza, it'd probably sound a bit like the Cooled Out Babies. The songs off their 2014 album, "Emotional Crimes," are a fascinating blend of modern-day lyricism, harmonies that evoke songs I heard growing up, and fuzzed-out production and jangly percussions straight out of the modern indie scene. The band pairs perfectly with The Van Goghs, local rockers who dabble in throwback classic rock sensibilities while holding true to modern indie sounds, particularly on their epic "Higher to the Sun." Post-punk indie band I Lost Control opens the night at Debonair Social Club, 1575 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago. (773) 297-7990 or debonairsocialclub.do312.com. 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20

<h3 class="briefHead">Tommy sings the blues</h3>

Tommy Castro - a six-time Blues Music Award-winner from the San Francisco Bay Area - puts the fun and funky in the blues. Crank it up and you'll see that his songs bear the standards of traditional fiery blues but take a more soulful approach, with smooth lyrics and melodies you feel rather than just hear. He and his critically acclaimed band The Painkillers bring jams from their new album, "Method to My Madness," to rock FitzGerald's Nightclub, 6615 Roosevelt Road, Berwyn, Friday. $20. (708) 788-2118 or fitzgeraldsnightclub.com. 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20

<h3 class="briefHead">Starstruck, PGS reunite</h3>

A lot can change in 10 years. Location. Career trajectory. Hair color. But imagine picking up a guitar again and rebuilding a musical connection you left behind nearly a decade ago. That's exactly what's in store Wednesday, Nov. 25, when two local bands - rockers Starstruck (originally from the Lombard area) and pop rock band PGS (with members hailing from Elmwood Park, River Grove, Schiller Park and a stand-in bass player from Elk Grove Village) - share the stage for a dual reunion show at the Cobra Lounge. Punk rockers Burn Rebuild will also be releasing their newest album, "Losing Grip," and Chicago pop-punk band Post Script open for the set. Cobra Lounge, 235 N. Ashland Ave., Chicago. $10-$15. (312) 226-6300 or cobralounge.com. 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25
