Cantigny announces its 5K winners

For the second straight year, Chris Zielinski captured first place at the Cantigny 5K Run/Walk. With a chip time of 17 minutes, 27 seconds (17:26.59), the 40-year-old from Plainfield averaged 5:37 minutes per mile.

The Cantigny 5K celebrated its 12th anniversary Nov. 7 with a full field of 1,000 runners and walkers at Cantigny Park in Wheaton.

Second place overall went to Batavia resident Keaton Keller, 16. Third place belonged to Chris Floyd, 15, from Roselle.

The top female runner was Samantha Poglitsch, 13, from Wheaton. Her chip time was 20:31.45. Poglitsch won the 2012 Cantigny 5K women's division at age 10, and finished second last year.

Second and third places for women, respectively, went to Rachel Bryla, 30, of Lemont and Kaitlyn Hollar, 13, of Aurora.

Wheaton resident Dillon Richardson, 9, was tops among 33 entrants in the one-mile Cantigny Youth Run with a time of 6 minutes and 48 seconds. The leading female youth runner and sixth overall was May Adduci, a 9-year-old from Glen Ellyn. The Youth Run was for boys and girls ages 6 to 10.

The Cantigny 5K Run/Walk is organized annually in association with Veterans Day. Net proceeds from the race benefit the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans in Wheaton. A check was presented to the shelter Nov. 11 as part of Cantigny Park's Veterans Day Luminaria Tribute.

The Cantigny 5K has generated more than $62,000 for the shelter since 2008, the first year the race became associated with the organization.

The 13th annual Cantigny 5K Run/Walk will take place Nov. 5, 2016. Online registration begins in April at signmeup.com.
