Lenahan commits to Maryville basketball future in arch-rival St. Louis

At the age of 6, Erin Lenahan and her family went on a vacation to St. Louis.

She remembers seeing "this huge arch" on her visit but with time limitations, she and her family did not take the tour which allows a view of up to 30 miles in the observation deck.

Lenahan will soon have plenty of time to take that tour.

And when she looks down, she'll probably able to see a glimpse of the campus where she will spend her collegiate days playing Division II basketball.

Lenahan committed to Maryville University in St. Louis on Aug. 28.

Little did she know, at the age of 6, she would one day return to St. Louis for her skills as a basketball player.

At the time, she was only thinking about her footwork - as an Irish dancer. She hadn't even picked up a basketball.

"I didn't have the body type for the Irish dancing," Lenahan said. "You have to have short legs for the footwork. My brothers (Neil and Ryan) always played basketball so my mom (Eileen) said why not try playing basketball."

Mom's suggestion turned out perfect as Lenahan has made herself one of the top players in the Mid-Suburban League.

"Erin's athleticism is lights out, as far as driving to the basket and finishing, " said Fremd girls basketball coach Dave Yates. "Erin is heading for a breakout year. She has accepted a limited role the last couple of years due to the talent we have had, and I think she is ready to explode on the scene."

The St. Louis coaching staff discovered Lenahan at exposure camps while she was playing for her Midwest Elite team.

Being a Cubs fans, Erin made a fun bet with her future coaches on the postseason National League division series with the St. Louis Cardinals. "When the Cardinals lost the series, they had to wear Cubs jerseys and they sent me photos," Erin said with a laugh. "I really enjoy the coaching staff there and everything was really comforting."

For now, she is looking for forward to contributing to Fremd's success.

"I want to go back downstate," she said. "I feel like we have a good season ahead of us."

And Lenahan should have a good future ahead in college, as well, where she plans to study physical therapy.
