  WWII Army veteran Joe Brown, middle, of Chicago and WWII Navy Veteran Robert Newren, of Palatine have breakfast together during the 4th Annual Veterans Breakfast, held in the St. Peter Lutheran Church gym in Arlington Heights Saturday. Brown and Newren have been friends for 77 years, since their freshman year at Lane Tech High School in Chicago in 1938, and they have maintained that friendship ever since. They enlisted in their respective armed services in April, 1943 and were discharged in 1946. "There has never been a cross word between us," they said. At left is Joe's son Charles, who lives next door in Chicago. Charles has two sons in the Army, one a drill sergeant, and the other a Purple Heart veteran who served in Afghanistan.   A Kane County Forest Preserve District mounted ranger is silhouetted against the setting sun as the 85th Elburn Days kicks off with a parade. Evening light is usually pretty sweet to a photographer, and this particular night in Elburn was no different. A long time ago a good friend told me "Brian, don't be afraid to shoot into the light," I have taken that advice to heart since then and made some wonderful images.   I'm not much of a nature photographer, I rarely take pictures that are void of people, and I try to stay away from cliche's, but hey, who doesn't like a big beautiful leaf? What better time than now to offer up my annual big beautiful leaf photo? I couldn't resist shooting the last few leaves that remained on our backyard maple tree, as a late afternoon fall sunset illuminated them for the last time.
