No. 19 Northwestern women top Howard 89-49

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) - Nia Coffey scored 27 points and pierced the 1,000-point career mark for No. 19 Northwestern in an 89-49 win over Howard on Sunday.

Coffey, a junior, entered the game just 5 points shy of the milestone and reached it less than five minutes in on a 3-point play that gave Northwestern a 10-4 lead in its season opener. She finished 8 of 15 from the floor, including a 3-pointer, and had 10 free throws.

Christen Inman added 18 points and Ashley Deary had 16 for the Wildcats, who shot 49 percent on 65 shots from the field and forced 26 turnovers.

Howard (0-2) scored the opening bucket, a layup from Victoria Gonzales, to take its only lead. The Bison shot just 30 percent from the floor and missed all 18 of their attempts from 3-point range.

Gonzales led Howard with 21 points and nine rebounds.
