Robert Frost school honors veterans

On Thursday, Nov. 12, community veterans were honored at Robert Frost Junior High School.

The veterans were greeted at the door by Frost students and given a T-shirt to commemorate the Veterans Day celebration. T-shirts were also purchased and worn by Frost students and staff. Proceeds from T-shirt sales will be donated to the "Guitars for Vets" program.

Upon arrival, the veterans were escorted to the gym, where they were recognized in a ceremony before the attendees of the boys basketball game that was taking place that evening. During the ceremony, a few words were spoken about each veteran and they were given a certificate and a flag.

The veterans were then escorted to the school cafeteria for a dinner. The halls to the cafeteria were lined with green lights in support of the "Green Light a Vet" program, and the walls outside the cafeteria were lined with cards, which Frost students had created.

As the veterans entered the cafeteria, they were greeted by two, 32-foot banners with messages of thanks from Frost students and tables lined with tablecloths decorated by the students. The tables were adorned with red, white and blue balloons donated by a Frost family. The veterans enjoyed a meal and dessert while a video telling stories of their service played at the front.

The dinner was a culmination of weeklong events celebrating Veterans Day that took place at the Schaumburg junior high school. The week's celebration was organized by Joan Czarnecki, with support from Rob Ferguson, Angela Mytech, Mike Sroka, David Luzwick, Kristen Carney and Bob Burak.

The event was considered a huge success by the attendees who appreciated the opportunity to be recognized for their service. This was the first Veterans Dinner hosted by Robert Frost Junior High.
