Benedictine invites former U.S. solicitor general to share insights as lawyer before Supreme Court
"Lawyering in the Roberts Court: Ten Lessons from Ten Years" will be the focus of a lecture by former U.S. Solicitor General Paul Clement from 7:00-9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 17, in the auditorium of the Goodwin Hall of Business at Benedictine University.
The event is free and open to the public.
Following his graduation from Harvard Law School, Clement clerked for Associate Justice Antonin Scalia of the U.S. Supreme Court and Judge Laurence H. Silberman of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Clement served as the 43rd solicitor general of the United States under President George W. Bush from June 2005 to July 2008.
Today, Clement is a partner with the law firm of Bancroft PLLC, a distinguished lecturer at Georgetown University Law Center and senior fellow at the university's Supreme Court Institute.
Clement has argued more than 75 cases before the Supreme Court (more than any attorney since 2000) and has initiated major administrative law challenges and constitutional litigation against the federal government, occasionally accepting significant pro bono agreements on behalf of his clients. His practice focuses on strategic consulting and appellate legislation.
Selected by the National Law Journal in 2012 as one of the "100 Most Influential Lawyers in America," Clement was also recognized as the "2012 Lawyer of the Year" by the Bar Association of the District of Columbia.
Clement was invited to speak as part of Benedictine's nonpartisan, nonprofit Center for Civic Leadership Speaker Series, which seeks to bring dynamic speakers to campus so that students and the larger community can fully engross themselves in multiple issues and topics of public concern. Established in 2005, the CCL aims to improve civic engagement, leadership and education in Illinois and helps to prepare students for leadership roles in public service and as world citizens.
"Paul Clement has a remarkable record, both as the solicitor general and as a private attorney arguing more cases than almost any lawyer in the modern era before the Supreme Court," said Phil Hardy, Ph.D., assistant professor of Political Science and director of the CCL at Benedictine. "We are eager to welcome him to campus and hear about his experiences as one of the most respected and experienced lawyers in the United States."
