Elgin martial artists achieve top honors

Kyuki-Do Martial Arts students from throughout the United States recently gathered at the Kalahari Resort and Convention Center for the American Kyuki-Do Federation's annual Black Belt Extravaganza.

The weekend was comprised of instructional seminars as well as an examination of candidates for the rank of 1st Degree (Dan) or Higher. Those testing were:

• 1st Dan: Christopher Flores, Ronald Graziano, Caleb Greenberg, Monica Hermann, David M. Kujawa, Zach Lichner, Erik Lockard, John Lockard, Austin Minella, Don Octavo, Violeta Rendon, Dawn Sanderson

• 2nd Dan: Cassandra Meyer

• 3rd Dan: Andrew McCurdy

The American Kyuki-Do Federation is the sanctioning body for all Kyuki-Do affiliates throughout the United States.

"Having 14 students promoted is a tremendous recognition of the quality of instruction we've striven to maintain over the past 48 years," said Master Jeff Kim, owner of Kyuki-Do Martial Arts of Elgin. A potluck celebration will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at the academy, 792 S. McLean Blvd., Elgin. It is open to the public.
