District 54 schools receive Japanese language grants

District 54 is proud to announce that Thomas Dooley Elementary School and Jane Addams Junior High School are recipients of $3,000 Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Chicago Foundation grants to purchase materials for their English-Japanese dual language programs.

The dual language classes at Dooley and Addams include native-Japanese speakers and native-English speakers who receive instruction in both Japanese and English.

The goals of the program are that students will perform academically at grade level in both languages; will use both languages comfortably and effectively in social situations; will communicate effectively through speaking and writing in both languages; and will demonstrate an appreciation of cultural diversity.

The JCCC Foundation presented the grants to Dooley and Addams representatives during its annual JCCC Foundation Grant Ceremony last month in Chicago.

The JCCC Foundation's Japanese Language Education Grant supports schools in the Chicago area that provide Japanese language and culture education to students. Each year, the JCCC Foundation awards grant money to schools and organizations that provide education-related programming.
