"Just 20 Feet from Safety: The Story of the S.S. Eastland" is an informative and thought-provoking commemorative program presented by Terry Lynch. The passenger ship, which was docked at the Clark Street Bridge on the Chicago River, had been chartered by Western Electric Company to take thousands of employees and their families on an excursion to Michigan City, Ind., for the fifth annual picnic. While still at port, the boat capsized and 844 passengers and crew were killed.
