Green Oaks Scouts earn science award

Cub Scout Pack 194 of Green Oaks recently recognized five of its Scouts who have achieved high honors for superior achievement in science, technology, engineering and math.

The Dr. Luis Alvarez Supernova Award was presented to three Cub Scouts, and the Dr. Charles H. Townes Supernova Award was presented to two former Webelos Scouts who have since crossed over into the Boy Scouts ranks.

At the pack's Oct. 2 meeting, the following Scouts received this prestigious award and were presented with a certificate and Supernova medal: Christopher Benavides, Aydin Merchant, Connor Milligan and Luke Anderson. Jack Fadlovich also achieved the award but was unable to attend the event.

During the award presentation, each winner was asked to identify the scientist they most enjoyed learning about. Christopher, Aydin and Connor chose Albert Einstein, and Luke selected Nikola Tesla.

"This is a challenging and technical award for any Scout to complete, and it is a remarkable accomplishment," said Dale Thomas, Pack 194 Cubmaster.

"The award requires Scouts to complete significant research on Nobel Prize-winning scientists, participate in several in-depth scientific projects, learn and demonstrate scientific methods, and explore careers in a STEM field. Completing these requirements is quite an accomplishment for these Scouts who are just 8 to 10 years old. We are fortunate to have exceptional volunteer leadership in our pack to foster these types of programs."

In completing the numerous activities for the award, Cub Scouts work under the supervision of a counselor and qualified mentor. The award is approved and granted to Pack 194 Scouts from the Aptakisic District of the Northeastern Illinois Council with the approval of the Boy Scouts of America.

There are a total of seven different Supernova Awards that Scouts can earn throughout their tenure as Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers. The requirements and activities for these awards are designed to stimulate interest in STEM-related fields and to demonstrate how science, technology, engineering and mathematics apply to everyday living.
